This interview is with Chris Calvert, Professor Emeritus of Animal Science. He accepted an appointment in Animal Science in 1980 and retired in 2015.
Chris helped to develop and then taught the high enrollment ABI 102/103 Animal Biochemistry and Metabolism series. He was a recipient of the Academic Senate teaching award. His nutrition research used systems analysis to understand the role of biochemistry in animal metabolism and the role of cellular hydrogen ion concentration in metabolism and carbon flux through metabolic pathways. He also studied the nutrient requirements of captive animals. Chris was dedicated to his department and served as a vice chair for academic personnel and also as an associate dean in Graduate Studies.
Chris served two terms on the Winters City Council, including two years as Mayor. He was also a firefighter in the Winters Fire Protection District. In retirement he grows commercial olives, makes and sells jams and jellies with his wife Pat, and is busy with FFA students involved in their efforts. In 2022 Chris and Pat were named "Citizens of the Year" in Winters, CA recognizing their volunteerism over decades.
He is interviewed by his friend and colleague, Anita Oberbauer, Professor Emerita of Animal Science.
