Young roots: This is the same root system with everything removed but the largest
roots, which can be thought of as the skeleton or the scaffolding of the larger root architecture. This tree is the Krymsk 86 variety, a peach-plum cross; it was clonally propagated and 2 years old at the time it was harvested. Ph.D. student Rachel Noon used her iPhone, the app 3-D Scanner and photogrammetry to digitally stitch together hundreds of still images to create this 3D video. (Rachel Noone/UC Davis)
